Being different

I had a very rewarding day at DMG, Luton yesterday. DMG are one of the world’s leading machine tool suppliers who are active in most manufacturing sectors including automotive, aerospace and F1.
Surprisingly this wasn’t your usual machine tool vendor open house; DMG had organised it as a charity auction in aid of Rainbows Hospice for young children, where Red Bull & Renault F1 had donated various F1 memorabilia, many signed, to this very good cause. Attendees to the event gave generously in the auction, and DMG also held a raffle with the star prize being an all expenses paid trip for two to the 2010 European F1 Test Session in Barcelona.
Apart from running the auction, representatives from Red Bull & Renault F1 also gave a presentation of what it takes to be a winner in F1. It was very interesting to see what the teams have to go through today, especially with the difference of fractions of a second determining pole position.
Really there’s no difference between an F1 team and a sales team (or a whole company and its partners working as a team). In fractions of a second, your prospective customer may decide whether or not to deal with you or your competitor. It takes the combined effort of your whole team (the newsletter copywriter/designer, telemarketing, sales etc) to ensure your pole position in the market. Quite simply, the closer the teamwork, the better your results will be.
Richard Watkins, MD, DMG UK also gave a presentation on how today’s economy has changed everything and that we can no longer do things in the same old way. Just like DMG can no longer sell their machines in the same old way, their customers can no longer manufacture in the same old way. We must be open to doing things differently, and that takes teamwork, too.
